Figures released today by the Office for National Statistics have revealed that Selly Oak constituency is 63rd highest out of 650 constituencies for unemployment across the country, meaning the constituency remains in the top 10% of constituencies nationally with the highest unemployment rate.

Steve McCabe MP is backing the Secret Life of Us campaign, led by a coalition of over 35 children’s charities called the Disabled Children’s Partnership.

 

The Chancellor announced tax increases for self-employed people from next April, which will see nearly 2.5 million people pay £240 a year more in national insurance contributions. A fifth of people who are self-employed have their incomes topped up by tax credits, this tax rise will hit hard-working people already struggling to make ends meet.

 

The Chancellor also announced £66m per year for social care for 3 years but all the experts say we need £1.9Bn now to head off a crisis.

 

Steve McCabe MP is asking the Government why there is no money to save Baverstock Academy in Druids Heath despite announcing that over £320 million worth of funding will be available for new grammar schools in the budget.

 

The announcement was made ahead of tomorrow's budget where the Chancellor is expected to confirm funding of £320million for new free and grammar schools and £216million to refurbish existing schools.

 

Selly Oak MP, Steve McCabe joined staff, volunteers and service users from leading deafblind charity Sense for a mass walk through Selly Oak along the Birmingham and Worcester canal. The sensory walk was organised to raise awareness of TouchBase Pears, a major new community centre for the area that will open in the summer.

The pioneering new centre will combine specialist support for people with sensory impairments and complex needs, with services that will benefit the whole community.
