Steve McCabe MP welcomes news that 27 Bus is saved

After meeting with Managing Director of National Express UK urging him to save the 27 bus, Steve McCabe MP (Birmingham Selly Oak) has welcomed the news that National Express has listened to the concerns he and his constituents raised and has decided not to withdraw the 27 bus route.

The news was confirmed following a meeting Steve had with Tom Stables, Managing Director of National Express UK. National Express have told Steve that after receiving so many responses to the South Birmingham Bus Consultation, they have decided not to go ahead with the proposed withdrawal of the 27 bus. Although Steve has been informed that the route between Kings Heath High Street and Northfield town centre is safe, National Express plans to look at how improvements to the end of the route could be made. National Express will be holding another consultation when it has developed these proposals.

Steve met with Tom Stables, Managing Director of National Express UK, after large numbers of concerned constituents contacted the MP about fears over proposals to axe the 27 bus route. Steve wrote to the company in August, in response to National Express’s South Birmingham Bus Consultation, and raised his concerns about the impact of any changes on his constituents. He stressed the issues of: travel for school children; the effect on local businesses; access to key local hubs and hospitals; and the impact on the elderly and those living with disabilities. Steve and Mr Stables also discussed the wider challenges facing bus services in Birmingham and possible future plans to introduce contactless payments on buses.

“I’m really pleased that the concerns my constituents and I raised have been heard and that National Express won’t be scrapping the 27 bus. I agree with National Express that improvements need to be made to bus services in Birmingham and I am a keen fan of buses as a mode of public transport. I am rarely against change but I simply couldn’t accept the scrapping of a highly valued bus route that serves so many people in my constituency. I look forward to seeing any new proposals National Express puts forward in the future.”
