Steve McCabe MP calls for peace and security in Gaza and Israel

Steve McCabe MP has been inundated with concerns raised by constituents about the on-going conflict in Gaza and Israel.

On Monday the Foreign Secretary outlined the three objectives of UK government policy: securing a ceasefire; alleviating human suffering; and, keeping alive the prospects for peace negotiations. The UK is currently contributing £349 million of humanitarian aid but there are currently 17,000 Gaza inhabitants seeking shelter through the UN.

Steve McCabe MP said:

“It is horrific to see so many people lose their lives in Gaza, especially the lives of children and I utterly condemn all barbaric crimes and the loss of innocent civilian life.

“While I understand the anxiety about the actions of the Israeli Defence Force, it isn't possible to comment on these affairs and ignore the hostile actions of Hamas which helped end the recent ceasefire. We need to work within the UN and with other Middle East countries to influence Hamas to play their part in ending these hostilities and making a ceasefire possible as well as persuading Israel to start serious talks.

“It is my view that both the people of Israel and the people of Gaza and all Palestinians have the fundamental right to live in peace and security and it remains my view that a negotiated two state solution remains the only way to resolve this conflict once and for all.”
