Steve McCabe MP praises new local service for young people in the city affected by substance misuse

Shadow Children’s Minister, Steve McCabe MP has praised local charity Aquarius for introducing a new service which offers one to one support and advice to anyone under 18 living in Birmingham affected by alcohol and substance misuse.

Steve joined staff and volunteers from Aquarius to celebrate the formal launch of their ‘Young People’s Substance Misuse Service’. As a local Birmingham MP and Shadow Children’s Minister Steve met with the staff and volunteers to find out more about what Aquarius does and was very impressed with the level of support the charity offers to vulnerable young people in the city.

Aquarius works with young people who have problems with drugs, alcohol and other forms of substance abuse. Many of the young people they work with are also affected by being in the care system or have been in trouble with the law and may well not be engaged in education, employment or training. Many of them also experience mental health issues and some are sexually exploited or at risk of exploitation.

A key feature of this project is their unique partnership with Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). It is the only service of its kind to have an embedded CAMHS team to provide an assessment and diagnosis service for children and young people with complex health and associated mental health problems.

Steve McCabe MP said:

“With cuts to youth services across the country, it is important to recognise that vulnerable young people who don’t have a support network are increasingly at risk which is why I am thrilled that Aquarius has launched this new service. Without charities like Aquarius many young people who are affected by substance misuse would be left isolated. I wish Aquarius every success in continuing their fantastic work supporting some of our city’s most vulnerable young people.”
