Tesco announce they won’t be opening superstore in Stirchley

Today Tesco have announced that they will not be opening a superstore in Stirchley due to current market conditions in the retail sector.

After years of keeping the local community in the dark over their plans to open the superstore Tesco have told local MP, Steve McCabe that they won’t be committing to the project. Steve is due to meet with Tesco representatives this week to get some more answers and find out their plans to bring the empty site in Stirchley in to use to best serve local residents and the community.

Steve McCabe MP said:

“I’m very shocked to hear that Tesco will no longer be building the superstore local residents were promised years ago. I understand that the decision is based on financial circumstances but this news is a real blow to my constituents who’ve shown a lot of goodwill and patience over the past few years over the store.

“I’m concerned about the loss of jobs and will be having further discussions with Tesco about their decision not to go ahead with the superstore. It seems to me that the decision to approve the Lidl store at the nearby Fitness First site is the last straw.”
