Speaking  in the House of Commons yesterday at the Health Estimates debate local MP Steve McCabe opted to ‘tell it like it is’ and attacked the government for driving our NHS and Social care services to its knees.

Steve McCabe MP said:

“Five years into the reign of the current Secretary of State for Health we’re entitled to ask what on earth is happening to our NHS and social care system, and can we any longer afford the extraordinary complacency of this government?

Steve McCabe MP (Birmingham Selly Oak), has called out the government over figures about future demand for school places before a decision on the future of Baverstock Acadmey in Druids Heath is made.

The GP Practice which serves people across Druids Heath and the Maypole areas is run by South Doc Services who requested that Birmingham South Central CCG (responsible for South Maypole Surgery) agreed to terminate the contract and close the surgery because of financial difficulties. It appears that questions were first raised about the surgery’s viability in November last year but patients were not told until February after the final decision was made at the end of January.

Ahead of works set to start on the Selly Park North Flood Scheme the Environment Agency will be holding two drop in information sessions.

One session will be aimed at residents from Selly Park and one is aimed at residents in the Harborne Lane area. Details below:

Selly Park - Tuesday 7 March, 2pm – 8pm - Christ Church, 953 Pershore Road, Birmingham, B29 7PS

Harborne Lane - Monday 6 March, 2pm – 8pm - St. Peter’s Church, Old Church Road, Birmingham, B17 0BB

Steve McCabe MP is encouraging his constituents who are currently on the Council’s housing waiting list to re-register before 19 April 2017 to avoid being taken off the register.

Birmingham City Council is changing the way it allocates social housing to make the system easier for people to understand and to make the best use of the existing housing stock. The Council have also said that the current system gives people false expectations because of open access to the housing register and makes it difficult for existing tenants to gain an offer of alternative accommodation.

Steve McCabe MP is encouraging organisations across his constituency to take part in an exciting opportunity to secure grants of up to £35k.

Steve McCabe MP is deeply concerned about unemployment figures released today which show that unemployment in Selly Oak constituency is up on last month and this time last year.

The figures show that unemployment among those eligible to work in Selly Oak constituency is up to 4.5% compared to 2.4% nationally. The number of claimants in Birmingham, Selly Oak constituency is up on both last month and this time last year.

Commenting on the figures, Steve McCabe MP said:

Steve McCabe MP, Birmingham, Selly Oak has voiced his support for The Biggest Fight Against Bone Cancer, an important new campaign to raise awareness of primary bone cancer.

Meeting with campaigners from Bone Cancer Research Trust Steve heard from Jamie Wood, a former bone cancer patient and amateur boxer who was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma in 2010. Jamie underwent 16 courses of chemotherapy and 3 major operations as part of his treatment.

Steve McCabe MP has joined campaigners and patients to spread awareness about the challenges dealt with by people living with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL).

Steve McCabe MP, Birmingham Selly Oak, has learnt that new figures out today show mental health patients in need of care in their local hospitals are still being sent out of the local area.

NHS data has revealed that across England there were 528 Out of Area Placements active at the end of December 2016, of which 96% were due to the lack of a local bed. In the Midlands 115 Out of Area Placements were due to no local bed and 60 patients were placed at establishments more than 60 miles from their home.
