Responding to the Council’s consultation into the future of the Early Years Health & Wellbeing Service affecting Children’s Centres, Steve McCabe MP has raised concerns about the lack of detail in the plans and the way the consultation has been carried out.


Steve McCabe MP is deeply concerned about unemployment figures released today which show that unemployment in Selly Oak constituency is up on last month and this time last year.

The figures show that unemployment among those eligible to work in Selly Oak constituency is up to 4.5% compared to 2.4% nationally. The number of claimants in Birmingham, Selly Oak constituency is up on both last month and this time last year.

Commenting on the figures, Steve McCabe MP said:

With winter upon us, Steve McCabe MP, Birmingham Selly Oak has called on his constituents to ensure they are taking advantage of free help and support with energy bills.

Winter can be a challenging time for households and many people may be concerned about their winter energy bill.  Energy suppliers including British Gas have told Steve that help is available and customers should customers to get in touch so we can offer them advice and support. 

Steve McCabe MP met Cancer Research UK-funded scientists in Birmingham last week to learn about their life-saving work.

Steve witnessed ground-breaking research at the Institute of Cancer & Genomic Sciences at the University of Birmingham, where researchers funded by the charity are helping to ensure more children and adults survive the disease.

During the visit, Steve learnt about the Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Unit which works on trials across a wide range of cancers, including breast, lung, skin, sarcoma, blood cancers and head and neck cancers.

The 9th Annual Veterans Day hosted by Steve McCabe MP saw Veterans and students come together to talk about passed conflicts and remember those who gave their lives in the Battle of the Somme.


100 years has passed since the Battle of the Somme fought between 1 July and 18 November 1916. Over a million British, French and German Soldiers Died. 1 July 1916 remains the bloodiest day in British military history which saw 57,470 casualties and almost 20,000 of whom were killed.


Steve McCabe MP has called on local schools to take on young people as apprentices, in a number of positions ranging from Teaching Assistants, Business Administration and PE and School Sports support. The One By 2020 campaign, led by National Schools Training (NST), is calling on every school in the country to take on an apprentice by 2020.

Local community groups can now apply for a share of Tesco’s £12 million carrier bag charge fund for their environmental or greenspace project.

Steve McCabe MP and Councillor Eva Phillips are asking Amey, the Council’s Highways contractors to fix a mistake they made on Clandon Close, Druids Heath.
